Diagnosing overt hepatic encephalopathy — a condition often seen in patients with end-stage liver disease or cirrhosis — is notoriously difficult. It begins with the subtle cognitive impairments of covert hepatic encephalopathy that can get progressively worse. To diagnose the disease before symptoms progress, Dr. Jasmohan Bajaj and his team developed a smartphone application called The Stroop Test.
In a blog posted today on Healio Gastroenterology, Dr. Bajaj provides greater detail on this five-minute test and its potential in combatting hepatic encephalopathy, a highly debilitating disorder.
Dr. Bajaj presented data from the study “The Stroop App can predict the development of overt hepatic encephalopathy in a multi-center study,” abstract 229, on Sunday, May 17.
